I know some people think that I’m my own biggest fan, but the truth of the matter is that I’m actually a far bigger fan of my students and their successes. So I absolutely LOVE writing blogs like this one, because our second Baby Whisperer has just been featured in the national press praising her business savvy and entrepreneurship!

Karen Wiltshire, one of our Baby Whisperer principals and a former Photographer of the Year, was the focus of a piece in Woman & Home magazine this month. In it she talked about the success of her baby business and how she turned her redundancy into an opportunity to be her own boss and make a living on her own terms.

Having invested part of her redundancy package into converting her home into a studio, she then invested in the professional training that has pushed her to where she is today. “Get a mentor,” she told the magazine. “This was the light-bulb moment that helped me take my business seriously, and being a solo operator you really need that outside support.

“Once every eight weeks I travel up to Chester and work as part of a group of six pupils on his ‘Mentor Me On Steroids’ programme,” she continued. “His mentoring sessions have produced 16 Photographers of the Year. He always says, ‘We’re in the business of photography, [so] you need to run your practice like a business, not just a creative outlet.’ I’d been taking a salary but working with him made me realise that I had to start charging proper money.”

I’m pleased as punch for Karen and her business to be featured so prominently in a leading mainstream magazine. And it’s really refreshing and heartwarming for her to give us some credit and kudos for helping her build her business into the success story that it’s become. We train lots and lots of people and help them with their business and photography, so when they take the time to thank us so publicly… it really is nice to be appreciated!

So hat’s off to Karen – she’s doing great and I couldn’t be more proud of her.
